Summary

This lush book of photography represents National Geographic's Photo Ark, a major cross-platform initiative and lifelong project by photographer Joel Sartore to make portraits of the world's animals--especially those that are endangered。 His powerful message, conveyed with humor, compassion, and art: to know these animals is to save them。

Sartore intends to photograph every animal in captivity in the world。 He is circling the globe, visiting zoos and wildlife rescue centers to create studio portraits of 12,000 species, with an emphasis on those facing extinction。 He has photographed more than 6,000 already and now, thanks to a multi-year partnership with National Geographic, he may reach his goal。 This book showcases his animal portraits: from tiny to mammoth, from the Florida grasshopper sparrow to the greater one-horned rhinoceros。 Paired with the eloquent prose of veteran wildlife writer Douglas Chadwick, this book presents a thought-provoking argument for saving all the species of our planet。

This was really a wonderful collection of photos。 Each picture of each endangered species sends something stirring in your heart。 Joel Sartore paints a really convicting picture of the need for conservation for endangered animals。 I recommend anyone to flip through the pictures and read the inspiring stories of hope in the wild。

A remarkable and revealing book。 Looking into the animals' eyes, their intense, direct gaze you can tell they have intelligence, curiosity and soul。 yes, there is a God。 A remarkable and revealing book。 Looking into the animals' eyes, their intense, direct gaze you can tell they have intelligence, curiosity and soul。 yes, there is a God。 。。。more

Stunning photography and lovely background information on many of the species。

Stunning。。。 every animal has a personality and home。 This book really makes you think about how man is destroying other beings - even though we depend on them。

Really appreciate his effort to try and document down all the animal photos。 And the fact there is so much symmetry between pages to pages deserves a 5 stars in my opinion。

Joel has photographed 6000 of the world species。 There are as many as 10000 in captivity。 His goal is to get them all before they vanish。 This is both a delightful and upsetting book。

It features 400 plus color photographs by the famed Joel Sartore。 He’s now more than a decade into his endeavor to document more than 6,000 species, all shot against white or black backgrounds — all quite stunning。

I saw a segment on 60 Minutes about Joel, and was fascinated by his work。 I was looking forward to seeing all the animals in this book, and it was magnificent。The book is divided up into different chapters, with titles like Mirrors and Pairs。 The titles refer to several things, how the animals are posed, how the animals live together and interact with each other and what types of creatures they are。 Each chapter showcases a wide variety of animals and they are all stunning to look it, though, pe I saw a segment on 60 Minutes about Joel, and was fascinated by his work。 I was looking forward to seeing all the animals in this book, and it was magnificent。The book is divided up into different chapters, with titles like Mirrors and Pairs。 The titles refer to several things, how the animals are posed, how the animals live together and interact with each other and what types of creatures they are。 Each chapter showcases a wide variety of animals and they are all stunning to look it, though, personally, I was not a fan of the bugs。My favorite photos were of the big cats。 They were just so expressive, and reading about them was so interesting。 My all time favorite in the book though was of an arctic fox cub。 The short description said that the fox was really fidgety and would not stand still, until someone squealed really loud。 Then the fox stopped moving and tilted it's head in such a cute, quizzical way, that Joel was able to get his shot。The eloquent text really demonstrates why each of the animals is unique and precious, and why they all need to be protected。 If you love animals, check this book out。 。。。more

Had seen a piece about Sartore on television so when I saw this in our local library catalog I decided I needed to check it out。 Outstanding photos obviously but also interesting information about the animals & conservation efforts throughout the book。 And I appreciated that at the end, all of the animals were listed again with the zoos & other facilities where he had taken the pictures。 Now I will have to find his other books & probably add this one to our family library。 Not a read-through boo Had seen a piece about Sartore on television so when I saw this in our local library catalog I decided I needed to check it out。 Outstanding photos obviously but also interesting information about the animals & conservation efforts throughout the book。 And I appreciated that at the end, all of the animals were listed again with the zoos & other facilities where he had taken the pictures。 Now I will have to find his other books & probably add this one to our family library。 Not a read-through book but a take your time book, which is why it is the first book I finished this year instead of one I finished late last year 。。。more

This is the second book I’ve received, containing the photographs of Joel Sartore。 Sartore is on a journey to raise the profile of the world’s wildlife, particularly those species that are vulnerable to extinction。 Each picture is taken against a plain background so you focus on the beauty and majesty of each animal, reptile, bird or insect, rather than their size。 It is impossible to wonder at the beauty of the photographs without becoming heartbroken at the devastation the human race has on th This is the second book I’ve received, containing the photographs of Joel Sartore。 Sartore is on a journey to raise the profile of the world’s wildlife, particularly those species that are vulnerable to extinction。 Each picture is taken against a plain background so you focus on the beauty and majesty of each animal, reptile, bird or insect, rather than their size。 It is impossible to wonder at the beauty of the photographs without becoming heartbroken at the devastation the human race has on the planet, with zero f**ks given to their survival, as long as large corporations can continue to make huge profits and people get to consume, trash, repeat until their heart’s content。This is an eye-opener。 We don’t have long left to turn this around before we risk losing even more from our worldwide this book highlights just how close the end is。 。。。more

Stunning。 I’m a huge fan of Joel’s work。 His photographs are breathtaking, of the tiniest to the largest animals。 So sad that so many are struggling in the wild。 We need to be better。

This is mostly about the pictures, and…wow! Those pictures! They're beautiful, amazing, and paired so cleverly together。 I love, love, love it。 Sometimes I wish the captions had a little more about the animals, but the point of the book is more to capture their likenesses and make us care…so we can then research for ourselves。 The few tidbits included are fascinating。 I also enjoyed the written sections, like the forewords by Harrison Ford, Douglas H。 Chadwick, and the author, the sections about This is mostly about the pictures, and…wow! Sartore wisely takes on the power of the image rather than words to make a case for the need to keep our animals protected。 The 300+ pages carry a power stream of pictures that show the beauty and the uniqueness of animals。 His theme is not that we need the animals。 Rather than make the message that we have to have these animals, the author and the photographers show is how beautiful the animals look。 There’s very little words about why we should sustain the world with animals。 The pictures of t Sartore wisely takes on the power of the image rather than words to make a case for the need to keep our animals protected。 The 300+ pages carry a power stream of pictures that show the beauty and the uniqueness of animals。 His theme is not that we need the animals。 Rather than make the message that we have to have these animals, the author and the photographers show is how beautiful the animals look。 There’s very little words about why we should sustain the world with animals。 The pictures of the animals are shown without a background on wild life。 It’s the animals that carry the story。 There’s a short piece at the beginning of the book about the wide range of animals。 And there’s lot to see in the world: 6000 amphibians, 8250 reptiles, 10,000 birds, (only) 5420 mammals。 (p。 18)。 There are only a few sentences about the importance of keeping these animals alive。 The strategy is to show that the animals and humans share a much in common。 The authors use the eyes in the pictures to carry that message。 “When we save species, we save ourselves。” (33)It’s a fast read。 The pictures will stop you to see what is being told。 。。。more

The author said he wanted to create photos to make people care about the animals in this book and animals and nature in general。 It worked for me 。 These photos captured amazing expressions and every hair, feather and whisker。
